Hometown: Elgin, IA

Major: Finance, economics minor

Why I wanted to go on the trip: I always love to try new things. This seminar just sounded like so much fun and a great opportunity. I couldn't pass it up. (And the 2 hrs. of Capstone credit was an extra perk.)

Area of expertise: Washington coast wildlife

Most enjoyable hike and why: Definitely Eagle Cap. I think everything about it was what I dreamed a great hike to be. Not crowded at all, camped by a beautiful stream, awesome weather, the fresh air.....I could go on....

Most beautiful sight of the trip: I cannot pinpoint one sight that I can say was the most beautiful. It was a lot of things-- the beach, the mountains, the crystal-clear streams, the wildflowers, and the sun!

Funniest moment of the trip: The funniest moment could possibly be watching first Raymond and then everyone else crashing into each other coming out of the waterslide at Vernal!!

The most important thing I learned about backpacking: There is not one right way to pack. Each person has his/her own unique techniques of what to bring and how to do things.

The most important thing I learned about myself: I learned that I enjoy taking a challenge and will do everything I can to succeed. Also, I learned I can actually go 5 days without showering and survive!!!! Just kiddin'!

Favorite thing about the van rides: I loved the van rides. Seeing more of the U.S., being in a completely relaxed atmosphere, having good conversations, and listening to CDs.

Favorite overnight stay: Definitely not favorite but most memorable was the Rainforest Hostel and sleeping with the mouse! Also, did anyone look in Amy's and my tent when both our duffels and everything else was in there? I think those nights were a little interesting when we practically had to sleep on top of each other!!!

Would I do it again and why: Yes, I would. It is a great way to get to know yourself and others better. However, I would maybe go for a shorter period of time.

Anything Else: I really liked getting to know other Scholars better. I hope that we are able to maintain these friendships, even out of college. We'll have these memories and pictures for the rest of our lives, and I know I will always smile when I think of this trip or look at my pictures!
