Hometown: West Des Moines, IA

Major: English

Why I wanted to go on the trip: I have never been backpacking and wanted to try it, plus I wanted to explore the western US.

Area of expertise: Seattle (kind of) and carrying Mr. Scrubbie.

Most enjoyable hike and why: I really enjoyed the Pacific Hike - it was the first one, it wasn't at altitude, and I LOVED the ocean. The day at the tide pools was really amazing!

Most beautiful sight of the trip: Missouri Basin area, as the sun went down and I sat by the stream washing dishes.

The most important things I learned about backpacking: It is much harder than I thought it would be, and realizing what things in life are really necessary when you have to carry them on your back.

The most important thing I learned about myself: I can do a lot more physically and mentally than I once thought.

Favorite thing about the van rides: Euchre tournaments, Cosmo quizzes, and trivia!

Favorite overnight stay: Probably Paisley, Oregon - I loved that town!

Would I do it again and why: In a heartbeat - I made new friends, it was a wonderful break from normal everyday life, I challenged myself physically and mentally, learned how to (semi-) "rough it", and got to explore a large portion of America.

Anything else: "Whaaaaatt!?!?" "I suck all the way around." "I'm all about easy."
