Hometown: Denison, IA Major: Chemistry Why I wanted to go on the trip: It was something I had never even thought about doing before, and it seemed like an excellent opportunity to learn and experience something new and exciting. I also wanted to see all of the sights. Area of expertise: Company medic Most enjoyable hike and why: Oregon - it was the most beautiful - and even though I couldn’t look down once I got there I actually made it to the top of a mountain. Most beautiful sight of the trip: The van when we came out of Colorado!! :) Well - and the coast when it was covered in mist (and I already answered Oregon). The most important thing I learned about backpacking: It’s a lot of hard work - but being alone 10 miles from anything even resembling civilization in some of the most beautiful country there is is well worth the work and preparation you have to go through. The most important thing I learned about myself: That I’m not good at everything - and that’s okay . . . and when I put my mind to it I can actually climb a mountain - both physically and psychologically. Favorite thing about the van rides: Getting to know each other better. (and Cosmo magazines :).) Favorite overnight stay: In Utah - the night before the cancelled hike when we went to see Saving Private Ryan. Would I do it again and why: Yes (in a few years when I’m in better shape). I learned a lot on this trip - - I didn’t really know what to expect. But I definitely want to get over my fear of heights and climb another mountain. And the scenery is irreplaceable. Pictures don’t even come close to portraying how incredibly beautiful it was. Anything else: Mountain streams were my absolute favorite sight!!
