Day 8: Saturday, August 1, 1998. Drive from Poulsbo, WA to Lily White Guard Station, OR.

This day of driving brought us back across the Cascades and into the drier, warmer, sunnier climate of eastern Oregon. Finally, after a week of overcast weather it looked like the sun would shine. We pulled into La Grande, OR at about 5 o'clock to do laundry at Bubbles. From La Grande we drove to the south edge of the Wallowa Mountains and rode on miles of gravel roads before reaching the Lily White Guard Station. This was one of the most unique overnight stays of the trip. We all enjoyed a spaghetti dinner and slept overnight on extremely creaky army cots.

BUBBLES! Just how everyone wanted to remember La Grande, OR.

The main cabin at the Lily White Guard Station. There were other bunkhouse cabins at the station, but we were only allowed access to this building.

Lily White. Accommodations slightly less luxurious than the hostel, but with more cattle and fewer chores.
