Day 4: Tuesday, July 28, 1998. Hike into Olympic National Park, WA.

We drove to the trailhead at La Push and began our hike. The first part of the hike was through the forest and then we made our way down to the ocean. It was very overcast and foggy that day, so we could not see the ocean all the way to the horizon. Even so, you got an idea of the grandness and size of the Pacific. From there we hiked south along a beach until coming to our first sand ladder. These are interesting, but make scaling the steep cliffsides much easier.

The sunbeams through the trees gave the forest the feel of a cathedral.

It was a very interesting contrast to hike on the beach and then in the forest. The mist that prevented us from seeing the horizon of the Pacific filtered down through the trees with the sunbeams.

After a series of going from beach to beach, hiking over the headlands as we went, we finally reached Toleak Point. We were about 7 miles from the trailhead, and had a section of beach pretty much to ourselves. This would be our home for the next couple nights.

Hiking along the beach through the fog was quite interesting. There were other people on the beach, but if they weren't within a hundred yards it was as if you were all by yourself.

What a bunch of studs.
