Hometown: Denison, Iowa

Major: Finance

Why I wanted to go on the trip: I guess I went on the trip because it was an opportunity to do something unlike anything I’d ever done before. I also knew we would see some beautiful country on the trip (and we did!!!), and it sounded fun!

Area of expertise: Low-impact camping

Most enjoyable hike and why: I would say my favorite hike was definitely the one in the Wallowas in Oregon. I thought the scenery there was absolutely gorgeous, and there were hardly any other people. I also think it was special because it was the first mountain hike of the trip, which was basically what we’d been preparing for since the class began.

Most beautiful sight of the trip: This answer goes right along with my response to the previous question. My favorite hike was in the Wallowas and part of the reason for this is that I think the most beautiful scenery, in my eyes, was the view from Eagle Cap. It was amazing!

Funniest moment of the trip: I would say, for me, the funniest moment of the trip wasn’t a moment, but an afternoon. It was definitely the time we spent at the water park in Vernal. I think just watching that was one of the funniest parts of the trip.

The most important thing I learned about backpacking: Basically everything I now know!!! I would say I went into this trip knowing almost nothing about backpacking and so I learned a lot of stuff about it through this class and the trip. From lighting a stove to filtering water to packing a pack, I learned it all through this seminar.

The most important thing I learned about myself: I think I learned that trying new things is definitely worthwhile! I was a little leery about the trip (because it was unlike anything I’d ever done before), and I did have fun. I guess it taught or reaffirmed in me that sometimes taking risks is one of the best things we can do for ourselves.

Favorite thing about the van rides: I don’t know if I really have one favorite part. Probably trivia is the one thing that comes to mind (even though I only won ONCE!).

Favorite overnight stay: I think I would have to say I liked the night in Paisley best. It was fun to just meet all the people and see that small towns do exist in other parts of the world besides Iowa. People there were so friendly, and we even got to sleep in BEDS!

Would I do it again and why: Yes I would definitely do it again because I had such good time and learned a lot. It was three weeks I don’t think I’ll ever forget, and I am glad I got the opportunity to go.
