Colorado 2001 - The Southern Sawatch

Early plans for this trip began to form even before we left Breckenridge during the successful "Condo Climbing" trip of 2000. We decided we'd return in a similar style in 2001, only with a new home base and new fourteeners to day hike. By winter Rick and Lynne had found lodging at the Monarch Mountain Lodge, located near the Monarch ski area at the southern end of the Sawatch Range. From there we would have easy access to several fourteeners: Shavano, Tabaguache, Antero, Princeton, Yale, and Columbia.

There was great interest in this trip, and in all over 50 people (mostly previous trip members) were invited. As everyone's summer plans became clearer, our group shrunk to a very manageable 11 people. The roster:

Rick and Lynne Stinchfield - recently retired and ready for the mountains
Holly Stinchfield - daughter of the Stinchfields, resident of Fort Collins, CO, and a seasoned veteran of her parents' adventures
Chris Ufer - Holly's friend and all-around good guy
Nadine Hinkle - Childhood friend (and new roommate) of Holly's, resident of Colorado, and member of the 2000 trip
Jim and Nancy Sheerer - Two great people and members of the 2000 trip
Robert Sheerer - Son of Jim and Nancy, Boundary Waters veteran, newcomer to the fourteeners
Jeff Maxted - Participant in Rick's 1996 (?) Colorado Capstone class and member of the 2000 trip
Jenny Jackson - Participant of Rick's 1997 Colorado Capstone class
Raymond Johnson - Me!

Our plan was to meet at the lodge on Saturday, August 4th. Part of the group went out early to do a short backpack and climb, and I left Iowa early on Friday, August 3rd.
