30 more days...
Date Adjustment:
The Stinchfields have sent the money for the condo and we have it reserved from
Saturday, August 5 through Saturday, August 12. These dates are slightly
different than previously announced, so be sure to update your schedules and let
me know if there are any questions or problems. According to the website we can
move into the condo after 4 pm on the 5th and we have to be out by 10 am on the
12th. We should be getting some confirmation on this information sometime soon.
Just in case, I'll remind everyone of the dates and times again before the trip.
Schedule:
What you do and when you do it is pretty much up to you, but with the above
dates I've been thinking of what our schedule might look like. This will
probably change, but at least it might put our climbing schedule in perspective.
Saturday, August 5: Arrive at condo after 4 pm
Sunday, August 6: Acclimatization day
Monday, August 7: Bierstadt and Evans
Tuesday, August 8: Mt. Sherman
Wednesday, August 9: Torreys and Grays
Thursday, August 10: Quandary Peak
Friday, August 11: Lincoln, Bross, and Democrat
Saturday, August 12: Leave condo by 10 am
Hmm...9 fourteeners in 5 days? Think you're ready? Note that
even if you climb every other day you could still get 7 fourteeners in 3 days of
work. Like I said, this schedule is completely flexible. I just tried to
alternate "easy" and "not as easy" days with a slight
overall increase in difficulty towards the end of the week. Also, if you're
arriving later than Saturday you'll still want to give yourself a day (2 nights)
at altitude for acclimatization. Also, you're welcome to climb the morning of
the 12th before going home. These particular mountains are all located in the
Front, Gore, and Mosquito Ranges, making them quite close to Breckenridge. There
is no reason, however, that we couldn't head over to the mighty Sawatch Range
for the big 14'ers like Elbert, Massive, LaPlata and Holy Cross. It's all up to
you.
Want a Ride?
Due to a change in my schedule I'll be headed west hopefully around August 1st.
If any of you would like to ride along (I can take one or two people) and get a
couple extra days of adventure I'd really enjoy the company. Let me know if
you're interested and we can work out the details from there. Thanks!
Mt. Hood
In case you're interested I summitted Mt. Hood on Monday, June 19th at 5:40 am.
It was a pretty difficult two-day climb but the view from the summit at sunrise
was worth every step. If you want to read about it and see my pictures, I've
posted a web site about my entire trip at www.scholars.uni.edu/~johnson/oregon.
Enjoy!
