The final climb of the summer was Mt. Evans (14,270'). Sure, you can drive to the top, but we opted to make it a little more sporting and parked down at Summit Lake (12,850'). I suppose if we were really looking to make a great effort we would have gone from Echo Lake, but this was good enough for us. Our climb took us over Mt. Spalding (13,842') and then up Evans's northwest ridge. The ridge looks pretty good from Summit Lake. Robert and Jim Sheerer started early and tried a technical route up Evans's north face and onto the ridge, and the rest of us would meet them on the summit.

The views of very nearby Mount Bierstadt and the more distant Grays and Torreys would be highlights of the trip. Meeting the masses of tourists who drove up is also a definite change of pace from our usual summit experience. We completed the climb by going full-circle, descending the Northeast Face route and hiking down the road back to our cars.
